Wedding Recap Five Years Later: Our First Dance + Other Reception Traditions

It took us awhile to agree on a first dance song, but ultimately we decided on You Are the Best Thing by Ray LaMontagne.  Ray is one of Craig's all-time favorite singers and we've seen him in concert together a couple of times.  The song has an upbeat vibe and definitely isn't your typical country slow dance.  I'm so glad that this is the song we agreed upon since it has meaning behind it and I think it fit perfectly with our urban, downtown venue.

Father/Daughter and Mother/Son Dance
My Wish by Rascall Flatts
(We combined the two traditions because, quite honestly, we wanted to get to the part of the night everyone waits for - the dancing!)

I Gotta Feeling (Tonight's Gonna Be a Good Night) by The Black Eyed Peas

Cutting the Cake
I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles) by The Proclaimers

A couple of stories about the cake cutting experience.  1)  It was an amazingly decorated cake!!  Better than how I had it envisioned.  However, only one layer of the cake was real.  The original plan was for the entire cake to be real, but with the July heat and humidity, our baker wasn't sure it would hold up, so all but one layer is made of styrofoam!  It took us a couple of tries to find and cut that layer!  2) As we were cutting the cake, someone wiped out right in front of the cake table!  I can't remember who, but that is why we're laughing here...

Garter Toss
Craig was super against a garter toss.  He thinks they're cheesy and immature.  However, I grew up going to small town Iowa weddings that always included the tradition and I couldn't imagine a reception without one...so he agreed.  I surprised him with a KU garter to make the whole thing just a tad better!

At one point during the reception, we snuck away to the rooftop for a few more photos.  I love the setting of these, but feel like we're both just sweaty and greasy by this point.

And now I'm smiling from ear to ear just reminiscing about our reception and all the fun we had.  It seriously was the best night of my life!  Tomorrow, I'm sharing a short video recap of our day!  You won't want to miss it!
