Friday Randoms

Oh, hey Friday!  I have literally had this Friday post in the works for three weeks now and could never muster up the energy to finish it (i.e. think of five things to post!)!  Finally, though, here it goes!

Scrunchies...remember them?  Well, apparently they're back!  All the high school girls wear them on their wrists.  I consider myself a pretty trendy person as is, but I feel like my job keeps me really young!

It's been just over two years since we closed on our home and we are finally getting ourselves a farmhouse table for the dining room!  We are having it custom built to match the style of the table below, but the hubs and I disagree on the finish of the legs - stained slightly darker than the tabletop itself (like the picture) or gray paint (with a stained tabletop like the second picture)?

I assume everyone has seen this mom-style Bachelor parody by now (I started this post weeks ago, remember?) but if not, you must watch!

| four |

I recently discovered these Bistro pre-made salads (at Walmart of all places!) and have been taking them for my lunches during the work week.  My favorite is the roasted beets & baby greens, but the cranberry walnut and spinach dijon are also really good!  (I'd love to try the kale apple veggie and apple blue pecan, but my Walmart doesn't carry them.)  Speaking of Walmart, have you tried Walmart grocery pickup?  I tried it for the first time over Christmas break and it's amazing!  More user-friendly than HyVee's pickup/delivery option and the groceries are cheaper - win win!  If you've never tried it, use this link for $10 off your first order (and I'll get $10 too!).

And finally, after reading and hearing about it everywhere, I started This is Us a few days ago!  It may take me awhile to catch up and I'm only two episodes in, but I'm loving it so far!  It's been a hot minute since I have watched anything unrelated to The Bachelor, but I'm excited to have a show  to follow once again!

That's it for today!  I'll be back on Monday with a recap/review of my 21-day fix!  It's taken me weeks to put it together!

Happy Friday!

Friday Things

Happy April!  More specifically, happy April Fool's Day!  I usually try to prank Craig...and it usually works...but I got nothing today.  What I do have, though, is a lot to share!

So the new Instagram.  Everyone was all "Turn on notifications" all day on Monday.  Meanwhile, I'm like heck no, I don't want a million and one push notifications popping up on my phone all day, every day.  I have them turned on for my husband so that I don't miss any of his instapics (especially those of our cute kids), but that's it!!!  There's no way I want a notification each and every time one of the 629 accounts I'm following posts a picture. #sorrynotsorry

Instead, I've been liking photos galore...or trying to anyway, so that I continue to see those accounts I want to see.  However, unless I'm just a big ole idiot, my feed seems unchanged??  It still appears to be in a chronological order.   Anyone else's or am I just missing something??

Anyway, a fellow KC blogger, Megan at Crazy Bananas, summarized the new algorithm and had some great Instagram tips (here).  Worth a read if you have a few minutes!

Speaking of Instagram, I follow an account called Who, Wait. Walmart?   It's one of my favorite accounts to follow because they post some amazing and inexpensive things found at....you guessed it, Walmart!!  Earlier this week, they posted about a Yeti knock off.  That's right.  A Yeti knockoff.  Craig and I have about five Yetis between the two of us (he has four, I have one), and they're amazing.  They keep hot drinks hot and cold drinks cold for hours.  Like I fill mine with ice water at 7am and at 7pm, the ice is still there!!  But they're also crazy expensive - $30 for a koozie, $30 for a 20-ounce tumbler, and $40 for a 30-ounce tumbler.  Anyway, Walmart now sells knock offs, and apparently, they're as good as the original but for less than 1/3 of the price!!  Though they're currently sold out online, you can find the links here:

Note: These are not affiliate links.  Just sharing for the good of the cause!

Did you see my post yesterday that included all of my favorite Target shoes??  Well, there was one pair that didn't really go with the rest...nor did they fit into my photo collage.  Nonetheless, I'm drooling over them.  I want these soooo badly!
(I wear a size 8.5, if you want early Mother's Day ideas, Craig Sides.  Also a Roomba.)

You are looking at one of the members of my neighborhood's new Social Committee!  The HOA was just turned over to the neighborhood (it's been owned by a developer) and on Monday, the positions for our committees were announced!  Although I still love our smaller, tight-knit group of eight neighborhood couples, I'm excited to help plan a few whole neighborhood social events throughout the year!  I'm thinking a summer block/pool party, a sleigh ride at Christmastime, and an Easter egg hunt next spring.

In 2009, a very well-known and respected high school football coach in Iowa was shot and killed.  It was a horribly tragic and earth-shattering event for all of those with ties to Iowa.  A few years later, a book written about the coach's life and story.  I purchased the book a few days after it was published and read it from cover to cover in about 24 hours.  Whether you're from Iowa, or a sports fan, or just looking for a good book, I highly, highly recommend this one.

Anyway, earlier this week, an article (as told by the killer's mother) was published to goodhousekeeping.com.  The article, My Son Killed the Town Hero, explains our broken mental health system and her struggle to get her son (the killer) help for years and years before he tragically shot this legend of a man.  As a mother myself, it was absolutely heartbreaking to read her story.  And although lengthy, this article is definitely worth your time.

Did you see my post on Wednesday about my new glasses?  There was a code towards the end for a free pair of glasses, but it was only available to the first ten new customers.  I have no idea if even one person used the code, let alone ten, BUT I have an additional code available for five new customers.  Again, you pay shipping but the lenses and frames are completely FREE!  Email me (sarahbsides {at} gmail {dot} com) if you'd like it!

And finally, don't forget these upcoming link-ups just a few days away!

On Monday...

And then on Tuesday...

Have a great weekend everyone and don't get fooled today!

Spring Cleaning Round-Up: Organizing Your Garage

Today I am so excited to be participating in a Spring Cleaning Round-Up - a series of posts centered around spring cleaning and organization from a handful of other mommy/lifestyle bloggers like myself.  Be sure to check out the rest of the posts in this series (links below), as these girls continue to amaze me and I'm sure they have some fabulous ideas!

...

If our neighborhood gave an award for the most organized garage, I'm certain my husband would be a finalist.  I mean, garage organization is his jam.  And I'm happy that it is because organization has a special place in my heart, as well.  Anyway, when Sara asked for bloggers interested in collaborating on a spring cleaning post, I knew right away what to write about--garage organization--with the help of my handy hubs, of course!

My (his?) number one tip to an organized garage is this: shelves and hooks galore!  Get things off the floor!!  Hang things.  Utilize the wall space.  Make use of the overhead space.  Get a pegboard.  The more you hang, the less that clutters the garage floor, which is key to an organized garage.  We are lucky in that we have a spacious three-car garage, but these tips apply even more to smaller garages!

I've compiled some of our (his?) favorite garage organizing solutions and some photos of how we use them!

SafeRacks 4x4 Overhead Garage Storage Rack
HyLoft 45x15-Inch Slat Wall Shelf
ClosetMaid Shelf Track 4-Drawer Kit
Hang-It Yourself Home Organization 30-Piece
Steel Garage Shelving Unit (similar)
Suncast Resin Wicker 22-Gallon Storage Seat*
Suncast Resin Wicker 99-Gallon Storage Deck Box*
25-Pound Stainless Steel Hook
SafeRacks 4x8 Overhead Garage Storage Rack

*Technically we don't use those wicker storage boxes in our garage.  We have one on our deck and one on our patio and they are amazing solutions to storing even more outdoor toys.

And remember to check out the other posts in this series.  I can guarantee you will be blown away by their tips and they might just give you the motivation you need to start your spring cleaning!

One final thing--we're giving away four Mrs. Meyers variety gift buckets valued at $37 each.  We use a few of these products in our house and they smell heavenly.  Enter to win via the Rafflecopter below and good luck!

One Year in Our House and More Grateful Than Ever

Even before Timehop was a thing, I was big on reminiscing and dates.  Perhaps it's because I'm a numbers girl and I tend to remember important days, years, and anniversaries.  So it's no surprise that I've been very aware of this day that has been sneaking up for a few weeks now.  Today, March 2, marks exactly one year since we closed and moved into our new home.

One year ago today was a very emotional day for me.  Leaving our first home, no matter how long I'd wanted to do just that, was downright hard.  In between the pressure of packing, the stress of the paperwork, and the excitement of a new home were lots and lots of tears over leaving the sentiments of our old one.

And I'd be lying if I said our new home--this gorgeous, brand new, and expensive new home--felt right from the get go.  It did, in a sense, but it also took some time for it to really feel like "home".  I remember coming home from school and not knowing what to do with myself because I never felt like I was home.  I remember spending time outdoors in those early weeks and no matter how warm that sun felt, something about it also felt so cold.

Yet here we are, one year later.  We have gone through all the seasons and celebrated all of the holidays.  We have found our new grocery store (one of the worst parts of moving) and adjusted to not living next to a Target.  We have found a nearby church that has been very welcoming and one in which we both enjoy attending.  And most importantly, we have found an amazing group of friends--friends who are supportive, friends who are great company, and friends who are in the same life stage as us with kids the same ages--to live life with.

Just last weekend, we went to the Blake Shelton concert with some of these friends and I couldn't help but think about how lucky I was.  We were out on the town with these people who, one year ago, we didn't even know existed!  To say we have been blessed would be a  huge understatement and I couldn't be more grateful.

As cheesy as it sounds, I feel as if we were meant to live here.  Like this house, this neighborhood, and these people were meant to be in our lives.  In fact, we had debated moving year after year, searched for houses, and even found a few we really liked.  Yet in the end, it was never the right time.

And now I understand why.

One year later and not only does that sun shine warm once again, but our house feels like a home in more ways than I could have ever imagined.

Our Long {Valentine's} Weekend + A Mini Home Makeover

If I had to choose one word to summarize our weekend it would be expensive productive.

It all started on Friday morning.  We had planned to take our kids to daycare and spend the day running errands, but Holden came home sick on Thursday so we were forced to keep him home.  It was probably for the better because we had an electrician at our house for four hours on Friday morning installing seven outlets - three in the pantry, two in the {unfinished} basement, and two outside (covered deck + patio).  We wanted the pantry outlets to plug in things like a coffee maker and toaster...so naturally, we needed a table to set said appliances on.

We headed to Ikea that afternoon and came home with the Forhoja cart.

And yes, our pantry is big enough to house this thing.  It's like a small room.  One of the best things about this house, in my opinion!  Speaking of, the reason we wanted a place for our coffee maker is because we were both using four to five K-cups every weekend.  We decided that it's silly to waste the money on the convenience of K-cups on a Saturday when we have the time to make a pot of coffee.  When I first got my Keurig 4+ years ago, Craig was not a coffee drinker, so the convenience of one cup of coffee was well worth it!  I still think it's worth the convenience on weekdays, but we both felt there was a better weekend option.  Anyway, our coffee maker is a coffee/espresso combo, so I re-taught myself (via YouTube) how to make a latte!  I'm not sure why it took me so many years to re-discover this thing!  My latte rivaled a $4 cup from Starbucks and I have a feeling it will be my new go-to comfort drink!

And speaking of coffee, I also had high hopes of adding a "coffee station" to our house.  There are so many cute ideas on Pinterest.

Follow Sarah's board Coffee Station on Pinterest.

But in reality, our coffee station should probably sit next to the actual coffee maker...which is in the pantry.  So we lose the cuteness/design factor.  Nonetheless, I found a few cute pieces at Home Goods, but I can't decide how I feel about them.  Cute?  Yes!  Functional?  Probably not.  What do you think?  It is cute enough to justify keeping next to our Keurig, even if they're never used?

Back to Friday evening at Ikea...we also got a new rug for the play area part of our basement.  It's not the prettiest of rugs, but it's very playroom-ish (surprised Craig got past the Denver Broncos colors!), and considering it was on clearance, it was about the cheapest we had seen for its size.

Mejlby Area Rug

Oh, and also new dinnerware.  Because Ikea is like Target in that you can't just go and get what's on your list!  Besides, our old plates were in major need of replacing.  They were chipped and red.  But mostly just red.  I'm so over anything and everything red.  Dinnerware sets are so inexpensive at Ikea so it was basically a no brainer.

Moving on.  My parents also came to visit this weekend.  They arrived late on Friday night.  We didn't do anything major, which means I didn't take any photos.  Just lots of hanging out and playing cards.  My mom and I did a little shopping--we discovered the store Versona and fell in love!  I would describe it as a trendy store for non-teenagers!  My parents also gave us a much-appreciated break from the boys' bedtime routines on Saturday night.  It felt so nice to relax on the couch, while someone else read books for a change!

Our Valentine's Day was pretty low key.  I attempted a festive breakfast, but the idea worked way better in my head than in real life.  Isn't that always how it goes?  These were the best of the best in terms of the pancakes that actually turned out heart-shaped.

After breakfast, we took my parents to the church we have been attending and then said our good-byes as they left the 50-degree weather and headed back to snowy Iowa.  Later that evening, I baked a homemade heart-shaped pizza with heart shaped pepperoni (inspired by Liz).  It turned out way better than the pancakes and this might be my new Valentine's dinner tradition!

Craig and I ended our Valentine's Day in the most romantic way possible - watching The Bachelor at 20 special!  I mean, I'm sure that's exactly what Craig had in mind! ;)  Good thing neither of us care about celebrating this "holiday"!

On Monday, we took our kids to daycare so that we could run the errands we didn't get to run on Friday.  But first, breakfast!  Just the two of us at The Big Biscuit.  It was so nice to sit and enjoy each other's company (and hot coffee) without whiny, needy kids in tow!

(By the way, I really do love my kids, but without family around, we rarely get a break from the norm!  So I apologize for what seems like an under-appreciation of my mama status!)

After breakfast, we headed to World Market in search of the globe/orb light fixture I had my eyes on.  We came home with each of the two fixtures I linked to on Friday...and then some - a light fixture for our breakfast nook, a new wall clock, and a wire organizer for above the Ikea table in our pantry.

We fell in love with this light fixture because it matches those we added above our island (from Lowe's--see below) about a month ago!  We still need to add an old fashion bulb, but we love it in comparison to the boring, old, builder-grade fixture from before!  (Here are the Lowe's above-island pendants.)

I also love this wall clock!  It gives our house the perfect farmhouse/fixer-upper feel without having to buy all new things!

And finally, the rack above the table in the pantry.  I really love this new space of ours, even if it is hidden inside the pantry!

Like I said, I was quite the weekend!  Expensive, as my husband would say, but productive in my mind!  We have yet to hang the orb fixture, but I already feel like our house got a mini makeover, which is always fun, right??   There were a few more highlights to our weekend but more on that to come!

Four-day weekends are the best!  Except when four days turn into five because of a sick kid.  Again.

I hope everyone had a fabulous Valentine's and/or long weekend!
