How Do You Properly Thank a Daycare Provider?

I'm still not sure I know the right answer to that, but we certainly tried!  More on that below.  But first, let me explain.

We were referred to Ms. Stephanie five years ago.  I was pregnant with Brantley and Stephanie (and her in-home daycare) came highly recommended by one of my best co-workers, who had sent her son there the previous five(ish) years.  He, however, was headed to kindergarten that fall and we were in need of a spot for Brantley, who would be 3.5 months old, later that October.  We visited the daycare one summer afternoon, asked a few questions, and signed our names on the contract.  Her house was a good 15-minute drive from ours, but the referral was well worth the drive and then some!  In fact, we didn't even look elsewhere.

A year and a half later, we welcomed Holden into our life.  The timing couldn't have been more perfect, as Stephanie had a couple of kids going to kindergarten that fall, so Holden started with Stephanie in August of 2014, at just a few days shy of four months old.

Later that school year, we moved.  That meant a nice, new house in a fantastic neighborhood, but an even longer drive to daycare.  20 to 25 minutes to be exact...20 minimum without a lot of traffic, 25 or more during the rush hours.  Not a big deal for Craig, whose office is in that direction anyway, but the complete and utter opposite drive from my school.  Still worth it because our kids were comfortable there and honestly, it was easier than trying to find a new place for two kids.

When we knew of Rhett's existence, we looked briefly for a new spot for all three and put our name on a few waiting lists, but nothing panned out.  Stephanie didn't have a spot for him per se, but given it was only a few months (February through May), she made it work.  (She was still within state regulations.)  She may have had to buy a new van with an eighth seat, but she *claims* they were going to do that anyway.

Stephanie was truly the best.  She took the kids out on "field trips" all the time.  Open gym, Deanna Rose, Music with Mar, the library, the zoo, parks, McDonalds, Sonic, Target, Sesame Street Live, and so many more places I'm likely forgetting.  She invited activities into her home - the gym bus and Stretch & Grow to name two.  She hosted "Parent Cafes" on the weekends to gather all the parents together.  She transported Brantley to and from preschool two and three days per week for two full school years.  She even had a special Dollar Tree birthday tradition - the birthday kid got to pick two things; the rest of her crew got to pick one each.

To say our boys loved it there would be a huge understatement.  It was and is literally all they have ever known.  Stephanie was like a second mommy to each of them and loved and raised our three boys as her own.  Our boys made their first friends at Stephanie's (Ellie, Jordan, and William for Brantley, Jace, Jack, and Owen for Holden, Baby Chase for Rhett) and by the time we parted ways with Stefunny's Daycare, our trio were three of Stephanie's seven and a half kids....all boys!  (I say a half because Drew was only part time.)

With both boys headed to preschool next year, we decided to look for some new options closer to our home.  Within a few weeks of actively looking earlier this spring, they were officially signed up for a full-time preschool about five minutes from our house, while Rhett will be headed to a new in-home daycare (or a new "Ms. Stephanie's" as Rhett says...her name is Laura) that is literally a few blocks from their preschool.  Truly like both were meant to be.  But of course, that means leaving our beloved Ms. Stephanie's.

So as I was saying, how do you adequately thank someone who has done so much for you and your family for five years?  Someone who exceeded our wildest daycare dreams and someone who loved and kept our three children safe for five whole years?  With a large chunk of change, of course, but I also wanted to give her something meaningful, something sentimental, and something the boys had a hand in making.  So we put together this bouquet of flowers inside a hand-painted mason jar vase and some personalized DIY coasters.

For the vase, I painted a mason jar with acrylic paint, printed a black and white photo on regular printer paper, and mod podged the photo to the vase. I also painted some mod podge over the photo to preserve it and protect it from any water drips.

I found the coasters on Pinterest a la this pin, but made my own templates instead of using hers.  I had the boys each color on one template (download a blank template here), traced Rhett's hand on one (since he's obviously not old enough to write), designed some stick figures on another with their names underneath each figure, and copied and pasted some poems on the last two (download poem templates here).  The poems may or may not have made me cry. 😉  I printed the templates on printer paper and used mod podge to attach to the coasters, which are 4x4 tiles from Home Depot.  Once again, I added mod podge over the papers, as well, to protect the designs and I also sealed the coasters with Krylon Preserve It spray.  I think they turned out pretty cute!

So if you're looking for the perfect gift for your daycare provider, teacher, or even a DIY gift for Father's Day, steal away!

And Ms. Stephanie, if when you read this (because I know you will!), please know how very special you are to the five of us.  I wish Rhett could get to know you as the other boys have, but three months with you is better than none!  I know we've already professed our love and admiration for you and your daycare, but once again, thank you from the bottom of my heart for loving our boys, teaching them, protecting them, and raising them as your own. We will make sure the boys never, ever forgot you, your family, or the special time they shared with you!

Valentine, You Rule

Valentine's Day is sneaking up quickly so I thought I would share an easy (and inexpensive) DIY in case you still need to check this to-do off your list.  I wish I could take credit for the idea, but I can't.  I actually found the pre-made Valentines at Walmart, but didn't like the card they came with so I made my own.  So by all means, steal the idea because that's what I did! 😉

What You'll Need:
 Cardstock
A color printer
Scissors or a paper cutter
6-in rulers (I like these)
An x-acto or utility knife

What You'll Do:
1. Download and print this free printable.  It includes four Valentines per sheet.

2. Cut exactly in half length and width-wise (at the 5.5-inch and 4.25-inch marks).

3. Use the x-acto knife to make two slits--one at each end.  Your slit should be the same height as your rulers.  I cut one card and then used it as my template for the others.

4. Slide the rulers through and that's it!

Easy, cheap, and non-candy-friendly!  And the math teacher in me loooooves that we are giving rulers to Brantley's 4 and 5-year old classmates!!  Start 'em early!

(Note: Check the Valentine's section at Walmart for these Valentine's...they include 10 rulers for under $2!)

And if you're interested, here are the Valentines we gave last year as well as a list of other bloggers' DIY Valentines.

DIY Money Tree

Today I'm excited to be teaming up with a handful of my favorite blogger friends and we're sharing all kinds of DIY gift basket ideas.  Mine is technically not a basket, but a something you can quickly and easily throw together that would make for a perfect gift for a teacher, daycare provider, or possibly even your mailman who delivered all of your Christmas packages. ;)

All you need is a small artificial Christmas tree (options here and here), money/gift card envelopes (here) or mini stockings (options here and here), some red cardstock, scissors, a sharpie, and a pencil.

Start by tracing your child's hand print onto the red cardstock.  Cut it out, write their name on it with the sharpie, and stick it in the branches of the tree.  Fill the stockings or envelopes with money and stick those in the tree, as well.  And that's it!

I love this idea because it can be easily customized.  You can do cash or gift cards.  You can add small ornaments, if you'd like.  And it can be given by a single child/family (fill each stocking with a smaller amount), or you can team up with a classroom full of kids (one stocking per kid; the amount of money could be at their discretion).  This idea is just so much cuter and more festive than adding said money to a card--and the tree will double as decor after the fact!

This is what we gave our daycare provider last year and not only was it super cute with all the kids' hand prints, but we added an ornament to represent each child.  (For instance, my boys ornaments were sports-related.  Another boy's was a mini Lightning McQueen.)

Will You Be My Valentine Blogger Exchange

This year, we were lucky enough to participate in a Valentine exchange with some of my favorite bloggers across the country.  The boys loved getting mail ("Balentines" according to Brantley) on a consistent basis and I'd be lying if I said I wasn't just as excited to see a fun envelope grace our mailbox each day!

I debated what kind of Valentine to send to our virtual friends (there are so many cute ideas on Pinterest), but in the end, I decided to repeat last year's DIY heart-shaped crayon Valentine.  After all, we hadn't used the idea on our blogger friends and it is just too cute (and too easy) to pass up!

 You can find instructions for the DIY Valenetine here, but this year I decided to include a free printable (here) for anyone who wants to recreate the idea.

Both boys got to help this year and both were near pros at breaking the crayons into pieces.  Imagine that.  #allboy

As for the Valentines we received, here are 12 of the 18.  I hung them as garland from our fireplace mantel, using mini red/pink/white painted clothes pins from--where else--Target's dollar spot!

Many of the Valentines had trinkets attached (heart-shaped glasses, glow sticks, mini dinosaurs), some included candy/treats, and some were too big to hang as garland, but they were all so adorable and so fun to receive in the mail.  It definitely made this blah time of year a little bit more exciting for this mama!

Be sure to check out the other bloggers' posts and Valentine creations!  And a special thanks to Meghan for organizing!

DIY Snowman Mason Jar Gift

It's three days until Christmas!  Are you looking for a last-minute gift idea for your neighbor, your co-worker, or perhaps your mailman who so graciously delivered all of your Amazon Prime purchases?  Here's a festive idea that's quick, easy, and won't break the bank!

What You'll Need:
8 ounce mason jar
Black buttons (Walmart has a 20-pack for under $1)
A sheet of red felt (Walmart has sheets 8.5x11 for under 50 cents)
Hot glue gun + sticks
Scissors
Marshmallows
A box or jar of hot chocolate
Optional: String or twine to tie together the jar and hot chocolate (I decided against this and put them in a gift bag instead)

What To Do:
1. Cut a 1-inch strip of felt so it measures approximately 1 by 11 inches.
2. Pull to stretch the strip of felt, then tie it around the neck of the mason jar.
3. Hot glue three buttons down the front of the jar.
4. Fill with marshmallows.
5. Pair with a box or jar of hot chocolate.

I had some round labels that fit perfectly on top.

We had so much fun putting these together and delivering to our neighbors this weekend!

Happy almost Christmas!!

A Morning of Crafting

One of my favorite things to do as a child was craft.  I wasn't much for playing with dolls, but I loved to color and I loved to craft.  20+ years later and not much has changed!  I recently added an art gallery wall to our breakfast nook to show off artwork that the boys bring home from daycare (and eventually school).  I bought the frames from Walmart ($4 each), removed the backs and glass, spray painted them with Rustoleum's Satin Heirloom White (a creamy off-white), and hung them (without the help of my husband even, he didn't think I could do it!).  Then I added Command Spring Clips to the insides of each frame (spray painted to match).  And voila! A quick, easy, and cheap DIY art gallery.

So naturally, I needed some artwork to fill the frames.  I scoured Pinterest for some summer-worthy ideas and came up with some seriously cute options!  Last Thursday, I made a shopping list and loaded up the boys for an early morning trip to Walmart for supplies: paint, googly eyes, paper plates, spiral noodles, craft glue, pipe cleaners, and circular sponge dobbers (I just made up that name, I have no idea what they're called).  After returning home, I put Holden down for a morning nap and Brantley and I got to work!  Not going to lie, it was a bit exhausting.  I laid down wrapping paper to ensure our table stayed paint-free.  Then, my perfectionist self ensured he painted the right colors in the right spots (I can't help it...) while also trying to keep our clothes, the chair, and the floor free from paint.  Taking photos wasn't the easiest thing, but I managed to snap a few.

Brantley wasn't a huge fan of the paint all over his hands.  Hmmm...I can't imagine where he gets that!

Despite what you see in the photos, he lost interest about half-way through.  I made him keep working (mainly for his hand and finger prints), but I ended up finishing a few of the pieces myself. #easierthatway

I'm so happy with how our works of art turned out!  P e r f e c t for summer and I love the happiness, personalization, and brightness they add to this little corner in our house!  I had a really hard time chosing which six to display!

{Pineapple made with thumb prints.}

{Beach ball made out of a paper plate.  Lines drawn first with a Sharpie}

{Campfire made with hand prints and a mixture of red, yellow, and orange paint.  S'more made with a cotton ball.  Roasting stick made with scrapbook paper.}

{Crab made with hand prints and googly eyes.  Sand made by tearing thin cardboard and mod podging it to the white paper.}

{Baseball made out of a paper plate and thumb prints.  Lines drawn first with a Sharpie.}

{Fish made out of cupcake liners.  Fish tails cut from scrapbook paper.  Both are mod podged onto the paper painted first with blue paint and circular dobbers.}

{Sunflower petals made from spiral noodles and glued onto the paper, then painted yellow with a foam brush.  Stem and leaves made from pipe cleaners glued onto paper.  Inside of flower painted brown with a circular dobber.}

{Watermelon made from half a paper plate.  Seeds drawn first with a Sharpie.}

And last, but not least, the gallery wall complete with art!  I'm not sure I could love it anymore!

I've already been pinning fall artwork ideas and can't wait for our next round of crafts!
