Brantley Carter: 12 Months Old!

Well, we made it!  A full year!

12 months.
52 weeks.
365 days.

Perhaps the most difficult year, too.  Especially with a first baby.  The adjusting.  The exhaustion.  The trials and tribulations.  The new sort of life.  But we made it.  We survived.  And we are having so much fun in the process!

A year old!  You've gone from a wee little, 8-pound newborn to a near 23-pound toddler with such a fun personality.  Feisty, but fun.  You have quite the temper.  Kind of like your dad.  But you are also so, so sweet.  One of my favorites is when you lay your head on my shoulder.  It reminds me of life a year ago.  Only now, without a doubt, you know who I am.  And I feel like you're doing it to show me your love.

Mommyhood is amazing, by the way.  I'm not sure there's a better feeling than knowing you love your daddy and me more than anything else in this world.  I hate seeing you cry, but there's something very endearing to know that I'm one of two people you want the most when you're crying.

Most of the time though, you are a very happy, little boy.  Always smiling and squinting your eyes when doing so.  All it takes is a smile from one of us, and you do the same.

Except for pictures, of course.  Then it's like you have no idea what a smile is!

You have begun to imitate the things we say.  The sounds, the pitches, everything.  So darn cute.  Which means Daddy better watch what he says when football season rolls around!

Other words to describe your 12-month old self?  Silly, smart, curious, drooly (will that ever end?), and ornery.  Yep, still ornery.  Not sure you'll ever grow out of that phase.

Speaking of, your doctor suggested we begin time-outs when you intentionally ignore the word 'no'.  (I know, crazy right?  You're one!)  She said you understand the meaning of that word and will test us on something 50+ times.  Your daddy and I are all about raising a disciplined child that minds, so, look out buddy, time outs are coming your way soon!  Just remember that we love you.

What a year.  An amazing year.  The best year of our lives.  We are so proud of you, Brantley boy.  You have turned our lives upside down (for the better, of course), given us a little family, and taught your Daddy and me about unconditional love.  We can not imagine life without you.  We love you more than you'll ever know and can't wait to see what your future brings!  Happy 12 months, little dude!

Love,
Your Mama

12-Month Update

Size - At your 1-year appointment two days after your birthday, you were 22 pounds 1 ounce (39%).  Furthermore, you measured 29.0 inches long (24%) and had a head circumference of 46.0 cm (39%).  Everyone always tells us you're huge, but according to percentiles, you're below average in all three measurements!

Words - You mimic many of the sounds/words you hear us say: da-da, dog-gy, uh-oh, ba-ba (baby) are the clearest.  You even mimic our sounds.  For instance, I often say "Yuck-y!!!" in a high pitch voice and you will respond in the same high-pitch voice.

Activity - This month, you learned to wave, head butt, and show us your belly, in addition to your old tricks of high fiving and clapping.  You also play peek-a-boo with us (hide behind something and then pop up and smile).  You're awesome at cruising around furniture on your feet, but still no walking.  I think learning to crawl at 5 1/2 months is holding you back pretty significantly.  No worries though...it'll happen soon enough!  You are still very independent and will play by yourself for hours.

Food - We switched you to whole milk one day before your birthday.  (Don't judge...we ran out of formula.)  Your doc recommended 16 to 18 ounces per day and I'd say you're right on par.  As for solids, all table food now!  You refuse any sort of pureed food, including yogurt!  Apparently you think you're too good for that kind of food.  Even cottage cheese - you refuse to let me feed you - so you use your fingers!  Among your fave foods: hot dogs, blueberries, and bananas.  (But you love fruit of all kinds!)

Sleep - Same old, same old.  About 10 hours per night, and two pretty lengthy naps (2 to 3 hours) during the day.  Your daddy was a little concerned you were sleeping too much, but according to your doctor, it's fine!  What can I say - like mother, like son!

Bedtime/Waketime - Bedtime between 8 and 9.  Wake time is between 6:15 and 7:15.

Hair - Very blond.

Eyes - Dark blue

Teeth - Still the same eight as last month.  Though the doc said she sees your molars!  What??  You're still a baby in my eyes!

Likes - Kinnick, eating (feeding yourself), sleeping, your bottles, other kids, baths, the stairs, technology (phones & laptop) and showing off.

Dislikes - Having your face wiped after meals, laying still for diaper changes, not getting what you want (remember that temper I mentioned?), taking your antibiotic, your car seat.

Wardrobe - You are wearing mostly 12-18 month summer clothes.

Diapers - Size 3

Mommy's Fave - I love seeing your face light up with a smile when you see me and/or your daddy.  No.better.feeling.
