Fri-YAY!

Hi, friends!  This is my fourth blog post this week.  Say what?!?!??!?!??!??!  Things at school are calming down (read: becoming more routine) and I finally feel like my head is above the water once again.  I have officially made it through my first full week of teaching - of year 10!  So today, I'm going to share five things that are all school-related!

This year, I have five sections of Honors Integrated Math II and one section of Math II Support.  Integrated Math II is a combination of geometry and algebra II--and for the second year in a row, I get to teach the honors sections!  It's a whole lotta fun teaching kids who enjoy math and who are good at it...and with five sections, that is obviously my main focus this year!  I also have one section of Math II Support, which is just what it sounds like.  A support class for kiddos who struggle.  The support class is taken in conjunction with their regular math class.  My goal is simply to help them to better understand the concepts and succeed.  It's funny--when I first started teaching, I hated the remedial classes.  They often include the kids who are the biggest discipline problems and these classes used to be the  worst parts of my day.  However, I have slowly grown to {semi} enjoy them.  They're easy to plan for, more laid back, and not so go-go-go like my other classes.  So although there are some days (and some kids) that still cause me to want to pull out my hair, for the most part, I have it pretty good this year!  Which works nicely for my upcoming maternity leave.

Speaking of, I met with HR yesterday to work out those details.  Assuming Baby comes on or around his due date, I will be taking ten weeks off, plus the two weeks we get at Christmas.  So 12 weeks total.  My return date is set for Tuesday, February 21 - a mere three weeks before Spring Break.  I know it's going to be a rough transition back, but I am sooooo looking forward to those 12 bonus weeks off.  Except that I don't get paid for much of it.......so that's that. :( :(

I sure do love all of the first day photos on Facebook and Instagram lately.  Meanwhile, Brantley doesn't start preschool for another two weeks!!  We've been asking him what he wants to be when he grows up.....mainly, so he doesn't say a snowman again. ;)  Stay tuned for his answer...

I'm on the search for a new lanyard for my school ID and keys.  My old one is not only broken, but disgusting (see below).  So far, I haven't found anything I love - for the price anyway.  This pink Kate Spade one is cute and only $20...but I'm afraid the silicone will tear.  (I constantly swing my lanyard lifeguard-style.)  I also adore this leopard print Coach lanyard (after all, we are the Jaguars), but seriously $43?!  Or I could always get a new Vera Bradley one, but I'm kind of ready for something different.  Anyone out there have lanyard advice??  I definitely need something for an ID badge...

  4. Is it weird as a finance/math nerd as well I'm reading this thinking "how cool to teach that to kids?". You rock lady!!!!

But on an annoyed note- why does us maternity leave suck so much?!!

  5. As a former honors math nerd I think it's awesome you're teaching the honors classes...my favorite teachers in high school were my math teachers! I had both my maternity leaves over the holidays and it was so nice....well the first time around I was a hot mess but this last time it was great! If only our country could get its' act together and have PAID maternity leave for 6 months....we can dream for our kids right?! I kinda hope Brantley still wants to be a snowman...that's classic!! ha!

  7. You are my hero for being a math teacher. It was my absolute worst subject.
Oh my gosh, I'm DYING over the snowman answer! Possibly the funniest thing I've seen all day.

  8. You go girl! Get your blog on. Haha. I’m a nerd, I know. Yay for surviving your first week with students. I can’t believe you have been teaching for 10 years. Seriously – I am coming to you when Mason has math homework that I don’t understand. I am sure you love hearing that. Ha. So exciting that you will get 12 weeks off (bummer it’s not 100% paid, though!). And then you will get another week off soon after you go back! Maybe that will help the transition…just knowing that Spring Break is right around the corner. I can’t wait to hear what Brantley wants to be when he grows up. I’m cracking up over those memes!

  9. I have an Origami Owl lanyard and I like it. I also had one from Brighton and it was pretty! I hear ya on the maternity leave. Henry was a January baby and I took 8 weeks off... and a ton of that was unpaid. The other two were April and May babes, so that was way nicer!
