Halloween 2014

Remember yesterday when I posted about how hot it was the weekend before Halloween?  Well, fast forward to the 31st, just six short days later, and the high was 45.  I think we may have topped that by about 10 degrees, and luckily it was sunny for most of the day, but it sure made for a cold night trick or treating!

This year, I wanted to dress my boys in coordinating costumes.  With Brantley being two, I figured this was probably going to be my final year to have any say on what he dressed as.  I saw the cutest Mickey Mouse costume at Babies 'R Us and since Brantley loves him some Mickey, I couldn't resist.  I then searched high and low for an infant Pluto costume, but the only thing I could find was a $90 costume on Etsy.  Thanks, but no thanks.  I decided to give up on a true Pluto costume and dressed him as "Pluto" instead.  I mean, is this not the cutest puppy you've ever seen anyway??  And Mickey...gosh, I have cute kids! :)

I'm actually surprised Brantley was so cooperative with his costume.  The few times I tried to put it on him prior to Halloween he exclaimed, "Mama, I don't like Mickey Mouse!"  Okay then.  I told him that was the only way to get candy and clearly, it must have worked. :)

This year was especially fun because Brantley actually understood what trick or treating meant.  We practiced the whole {Knock--Trick or Treat!--Thank you!} ordeal all the way home from daycare last Friday.  When it came time for his first house (our next door neighbor), he may have forgotten two of the three pieces, but definitely earned his candy for cuteness.

Daddy pulled Mickey around our neighborhood in the wagon, while I carried Holden in the Bjorn.  Holden was thankful for his cozy costume and slept through most of his first Trick or Treating experience.  And I'm not so sure everyone knew there was an actual baby in there.  No joke, I'm pretty certain some people thought it was a dog.  (A dog dressed as a dog?)

We had so much fun this Halloween and look forward to next year with two boys who will Trick or Treat!

Linking up with a couple (1 | 2) of other blogs today!

A Hot Trip to the Pumpkin Patch

For once, I'm kind of excited November is here.  Summer is traditionally a busy time, but I feel like the busy events just roll over into fall.  Our October calendar was crazy busy.  Vegas, the Lenexa Chili Cookoff, Mill Valley's Homecoming week and parade, appointments galore (dentist, hair, well-baby, flu shots), a visit by my parents, family pictures, cookie night at my friend Lauren's, and this year, the craziness that was the Royal's postseason.  I felt like our life revolved around baseball games for a good few weeks, and I'm not complaining one bit, but I'm happy to see things return to normal for awhile.

That being said, we barely made it to a pumpkin patch this year, not one piece of fall decor was unpacked from our basement, and we never had a chance to carve pumpkins.  I'm pretty sure that qualifies as a major parenting fail...  But luckily, Brantley's still young enough he won't remember our lack of festive fall fun!

We did finally visit the pumpkin patch the weekend before Halloween.  For the third year in a row, we went to the Louisburg Cider Mill and for the second year in a row, my parents were visiting and came along.  You'd think waiting that late in the year would mean some amazing fall weather, but nope, the high that day was about 85 sweltering degrees!  We wore shorts, yet we were still sweating.  Not gonna lie, it was semi-miserable and there was definitely no hot cider in our hands this year!

I think our favorite part of this particular pumpkin patch is the slide.  Every single one of us got in on the fun this year!

We opted not to do the corn maze, but did take a hay ride, fed some goats, and listened to a bluegrass band.  We left a little sooner than we would have had the weather been cooler, but had fun while there!

Holden Beckett: 6 Months Old!

I'm a little late to the party with this one...  You turned 6 months old - half a year! - over two weeks ago, but life has been busier than ever!  I did manage to take your monthly photo on time (well, maybe one day late), but this blog post??  Well, better late than never I guess!

Your fifth month brought your first haircut (by Daddy, much to Mommy's dismay), your first overnight stay without Mom & Dad, your first taste of non-rice solids (bananas), and the excitement of the Royals making it to the playoffs for the first time in 29 years!  You're not quite crawling, but you're definitely mobile and you get where you want to go.  You must have discovered your tongue this month, because you're constantly sticking it out and playing with it.  You're as cute as ever with a personality to match.

At your 6-month well-baby check, we got the okay to start solids and sippy cups!  Sippy cups?!  I barely feel like you're past the newborn stage!  She also mentioned baby crackers and cheerios.  Perhaps it's because you still aren't interested in food, but I just can't believe we're to that point already!

It was around six months that I started planning Brantley's first birthday party.  Now I just laugh at the thought of that!  My apologies, sweet Baby Holden, but I haven't thought for one nanosecond about April 18, 2015. :)

6-Month Update:

Size (At your well-baby check at 6 months + 3 days) - Height: 25.8 inches (24th percentile); Weight: 16 pounds 9 ounces (32nd percentile); Head: 43.0cm (28th percentile).  You shot up in percentile in each of the three categories.

Words - Still lots of baby talk and squeals of laughter.  A few more actual giggles this past month.

Activity - You love to be on the floor exploring and playing with Brantley's toys.  You also love your doorway bouncer.  I'm pretty sure you could bounce for hours.

Food - 7 ounces of formula 5 to 6 times per day.  Despite trying since around 4.5 months, you've never been crazy about rice cereal.  Shortly before six months, we tried adding bananas to the mix thinking maybe something sweet would peak your interest.  Still no.  Hopefully soon!

Sleep - You sleep about eight to nine hours each night.  Still not much of a napper (we're lucky to get an hour), but we take what we can get!

Bedtime/Waketime - Bedtime is around 8 each night.  You still go to sleep without any sort of fuss.  You usually wake between 5:30 and 6:30am.  There were a period around 5.5 months where you were waking up in the early morning hours each night, but after about three miserable nights, we decided to let you cry it out.  You cried one night for nearly an hour, but you know what - you finally fell back asleep and you haven't woke up overnight since!

Hair - Daddy cut it and suddenly it seemed blond!  It's still brownish, but nothing like it was 5 months ago!  I've warmed up to your shorter, lighter locks and people say you are resembling Brantley a little more these days.  (I don't see it.)

Eyes - Bright blue

Teeth - None have popped through, but you can definitely see the top two under your gums.

Wardrobe - Some 3 to 6 month clothing still, and also 6 to 9.

Diapers - Size 2

Likes - Brantley, your doorway bounder, being sung to, being held, being talked to, sticking out your tongue.

Dislikes - Being hungry, tired, and hot.  Having your nose wiped.

Mommy's Fave - One evening, Brantley was being really silly.  You kept laughing and laughing at him, and of course, he kept showing off for you.  It was definitely a proud Mommy moment and a moment I've been waiting for ever since finding out that Brantley was getting a little brother.

A Vegas Reunion

It's been almost a month now since we dropped off the kids at Grandma's and headed to Vegas to meet up with some of our most favorite friends ever!  We'd been scheming a reunion ever since the first of two sets of couple friends left KC in August of 2013.  Then the other set left last January.  But at the time, two of us were preggers, so we decided that in the fall of 2014, we'd meet up in Sin City.

Craig and I flew in late on a Thursday night, while the others arrived the day prior.  It was actually cheaper to fly out of Wichita, which worked perfectly since Craig's mom graciously offered to watch our kids.  (Thank you, Sharon!!)  The six of us rented a two-bedroom suite at Mandalay Bay.  Other than being at the end of the strip (which we knew) and having to take cabs everywhere, it was perfect.  After landing at 10:30pm Vegas time (12:30 our time), we caught a cab to our hotel, quickly dropped off our luggage and changed our clothes, and headed back out to finally reunite with our friends!  They were at Tao in the Venetian and it took us forever to find them in the overly-packed, techno music-playing club, but low and behold, we finally reunited and it was as if we had never been apart!  We stayed out until - get this - about 2am (4am our time) and even caught a performance by none other than Nelly.  If you even call it that...he "performed" about 2/3 of each of his four hits.  Still a ton of fun though!  Once we found our way back to Mandalay, we stopped for some crazy-expensive and pretty average late night (early morning) food and Ben may have tried to drink mustard.  And let's not forget Mark putting the reminder in his phone so to not forget the momentous and hilarious attempt.  By the time we went to bed, it was 4am (6am our time), which meant Craig and I were up for nearly 24 hours.  Pair that with being in a time zone two hours behind ours and not being able to sleep past 7am and I definitely paid for it the rest of the trip!

It was the next morning when I realized I had packed plenty of contacts, but they were all for my right eye and none for my left.  I don't even know how that happened...  (I wear the dailies and had already thrown away the pair from the day prior.)  So after freaking out for a few minutes, I tracked down a Lenscrafters on the strip and called my eye doctor in Olathe to ask them to fax my prescription.  Luckily, I wear a pretty common prescription and Lenscrafters had them in stock.  Craig and I spent the next couple of hours walking 2.5 miles to Lenscrafters.  We definitely didn't realize how far it was.  And 2.5 miles on the Vegas strip is really much more than that when you have to weave in and out of hotels and cross the street so often.  The most fun part of our walk?  Random strangers yelling "Go Royals!" every half block when they saw Craig's hat!

That afternoon was spent relaxing and lounging at the pool.  Vegas weather in October happens to be pool-perfect.  Not too hot, not too cold.  It was nice - really nice! - to bask in the sun without having kids to worry about.

On Friday evening, we got dolled up for dinner at China Poblano in the swanky new Cosmopolitan Hotel.  This was my absolute favorite meal of the trip because it combined two of my favorite type of foods.  It sounds odd, but think Mexican meets Chinese!  It was more of a tapas restaurant, so Craig and I shared four different small plates: When Pigs Fly (Chinese barbeque pork), Mongolian Beef Lettuce, Bistee Con Mole Amarillo y Hongos (grilled hanger steak), and Beijing Glass (cellophane noodles & cabbage with a bunch of other yumminess).  Oh man, it's making my mouth water just thinking about this food.  It was seriously amazing and probably less expensive than a lot of nice Vegas restaurants.

After dinner, we parted ways for awhile.  Mark and Hollyn headed to a Cirque du Soleil show, Lauren and I to Planet Hollywood for Britney Spears, and Craig and Ben to a bar to watch the Royals in game 1 of the ALCS.  (Don't worry, I had the game pulled up on my SportsCenter app while at Britney.)  I was super excited to see Britney and I'm really glad we went, but let's just say this... Britney can't dance like she used to.  And you know she's not actually singing.  However, she still "performed" all of her hits through the years and we kept joking that if our high school selves would have known we'd see both Nelly and Britney Spears in Vegas in 2014 as a wife and mother of two, we would have never believed it!

We all met up later that evening, but I was pretty exhausted so after watching the Bellagio fountains for awhile, Craig and I headed back to our hotel.

The next day was much of the same thing.  The guys wanted to watch some college football, so they headed to Mandalay's Sports Book, while we enjoyed some girl time at the pool.  The Royals played that afternoon at 1:00, so we joined the guys to cheer on our team on the big screen.  Dinner Saturday night was at an Italian restaurant - Sirio - in the Aria hotel.  Good food, but the appetizer and Caesar salad were my faves by far.  I'd go back just for that.  After dinner, we walked around a little and eventually made our way back to the lounge at Mandalay.  We were all pretty shot after a long few days, and since Mark and Hollyn had an early morning flight to catch, we laid low.  We headed up to our suite around 11 and I dozed off as a few others played a pretty hilarious game of {adult version} Heads Up.

Since our flight wasn't until 4:30 Sunday afternoon and both other couples had morning flights, Craig and I had most of the day Sunday to ourselves.  We hung out at the pool for as long as we could and checked out of our hotel room around noon.  After dropping off our bags at concierge, we headed to lunch at Burger Bar, which was connected to our hotel.  The burgers there were delish and Bloody Mary's were even better.  2:30 rolled around and it was finally time to head to the airport.  We were ready to head home to our kiddos!

We had so much fun during our 2 1/2 day kid-free getaway to Vegas!  (Though I will say, many of our conversations revolved around them...funny how that happens!)  It was nice worrying about only ourselves for a few days, and even better seeing old friends!  We're already scheming for our next trip (Nashville...Napa...Florida with kids...?)  and I, for one, can't wait!

Thursday night @ Tao: Reunited and it feels so good!

Friday: Lounging at the pool

Friday night: Dinner at China Poblana & Britney!!

A Royal Night

The day is here.  Game 7 of the World Series.  The first World Series that the Royals have played in in 29 years!!  Heck, the first time they've been in the playoffs in 29 years...the first time they played postseason baseball in 29 years!  It's kind of a big deal.  And perhaps the wildest and craziest roller coaster ride that brought them to where are are now...

Let's recap:

A Wild Card win on September 30 versus the Oakland A's after overcoming a 4-run deficit. In extra innings...12 to be exact.  Did I mention they were down four runs in the 8th inning?  Oh, did I also mention I missed it because I had accepted the fact that they were going to lose and I went to bed in the 8th.  (Note: I didn't give up on them, I just accepted they weren't going to win and since sleep is high on my priority list, I went to bed.  Biggest.mistake.ever.)

Swept the LA Angels in three games (best of five) of the ALDS, the first two of which were played in Anaheim. The first two of which also went into extra innings.  And because they were playing in the Pacific time zone, it meant extra late nights again.  You better believe I stayed up this time (or attempted to anyway...my eyelids may have closed once or twice).

Swept the Baltimore Orioles in four games (best of seven) in the ALCS, the first two of which were played in Baltimore.  And one of which went into extra innings...again.  We were in Vegas for the first two games of the ALCS, which made it even more exciting!

Then, the World Series...what a series it's been!  Game one was a landslide and went to the Giants, game two also a landslide, but this time the Royals were the big winners, game three in San Fran - Royals, games four and five - Giants, which meant the Royals needed to win game six to continue playing. And that they did - ten, zip!

Which brings us to tonight.  Game 7.  Winner takes all.  The great thing about baseball is that it's not about just one game...until it is.  Like tonight.

Win or lose, it's been an amazing season.  The Royals still competed in the World Series...something not a lot of people would have ever predicted.  Like ever.  And not only that, but they made it to game seven. They've shown the nation that they deserve to be where they are now.  They want to be here and it's obvious while watching them play.  These players have played their little hearts in what's been known as Blue October 2014.

To say it's been a fun time to live in Kansas City is a huge understatement.  The fountains are blue, the lights are blue, and there are tents set up at every other corner with shirts that read "Sh*t Just Got Royal." The atmosphere, the spirit, the excitement, the energy - it's all been so amazing and I'm not sure I've been a prouder Kansas Citian since moving here seven years ago!

Two weekends ago, we headed to the plaza to check out the blue fountain.  Craig wasn't initially thrilled about the idea ("It's just a fountain."), but I insisted.  I wanted Brantley and Holden to look back years from now and have some pictures to "remember" the year the Royals played in (won?) the World Series.  And boy, am I glad I did!  I love them, Craig loves them, and I hope the boys love them 29 years from now!

Let's do this, Royals.  Take the crown!

Sittch Fix #2

It's been 6 1/2 weeks since my first Stitch Fix, which meant one thing--it was time for another!  I purposely didn't sign up for monthly fixes, because well...let's be honest, I don't need to spend that much money on clothes that often.  So instead, I choose a date 6 1/2 weeks later.  Well 6 1/2 weeks turned into seven because my fix was three days late!!  Talk about a disappointment.  Nonetheless, I couldn't get home fast enough on the day it was delivered.  It about killed me to have to stay at work until 5 and finish all of my planning...

I will say, I am much happier with Fix #2.  Sort of.  Looking back, I loved the items in my first fix, just didn't love the prices.  I mean, $78 for a cotton maxi skirt?  No thanks.  I requested items under $50 this time.  And they did a pretty good job at following my request.  I also gave feedback after my first fix and asked for items that weren't so plain Jane...and to my liking, they obliged!

#1: Murray Paisley Print Sleeveless Blouse
I love the paisley pattern, and I know I could wear it under a cardigan, but I'm kind of over sleeveless tanks right now.  It's fall.  Bring on the sleeves.  Besides, it was satin-ish and it seemed to show every curve and roll in my post-baby belly.  (Sorry for the horribly blurry photo.)
Price: $48

#2: Brinley Corduroy Straight Leg Pant
I was skeptical when I saw a pair of pants included in this fix.  I'm curvy with a big booty and very picky about pants.  I tried them on, with very low expectations.  But to my surprise, they fit!  And they were quite comfortable.  I thought the side-view was even more flattering than the front.  I was still undecided because of their price, but partially sold due to the fact that they're work appropriate and can be worn with heels or flats.  Stay tuned for my decision...
Price: $78

#3: Dustin Mixed Print Graphic Print Top
This is what I was talking about when I asked for items that are unique.  I love this print!  I love the colors.  I love the fit.  The back is plain navy.
Price: $54

#4: Nadia Graphic Print Short Sleeve Blouse
Another super fun print that I could have only dreamt of.  Love the colors.  Again.  And the pattern.  Again.
Price: $48

#5: Ontario Mixed Metal Layered Cuff
Nothing special.  I don't dislike, but I also don't love.  I was less than thrilled about this item and would never spend $28 on something this basic.
Price: $28

So, the verdict?  I would have loved to keep items 2, 3, and 4, but didn't love the idea of spending $180 on just three items.  So I kept the pants and made myself choose just one of the two tops.  I choose #3 - the orange/blue graphic top.  I've already checked out online...and good thing, because otherwise, I'm sure I'd be trying to convince myself to keep the purple top, too.  Maybe next time...

Speaking of, I signed up for another for November 20!  A Thursday.  That way, regardless of whether it's on time or a couple of days late, I'll have the weekend to decide!  It was a bit stressful this week trying to find time to try on, make my decisions, and stop by the mailbox with the craziness of school.  But I will say, it sure gives me something to look forward to!
