Family Photos - Fall 2014

In October, we headed to the Nelson Atkins for a family photo session.  I hated the family photos taken during Holden's newborn session.  Mainly because I still looked about six months pregnant--which, I know, is normal--but I also hated my hair...and outfit...and the terrified look on my face as a new mother of two.  There was no way those pictures were going on our wall, so naturally I was looking forward the photo session six months later.  You know, after those pregnancy pounds had been shed and life had returned to "normal".  Here are a few of my favorites!

Stitch Fix #3

I debated about whether or not to keep posting my Stitch Fixes on here, but ultimately, I love looking back and seeing what I received!  I also assume people are nosy like me and enjoy the glimpse of what I got!  Am I right? :)  Speaking of, have you ever searched the hashtag #stitchfix on Instagram?  One of my favorite things to do when I have a few minutes of free time!

Anyway, last week {a day before it was supposed to arrive!} I received fix #3.  Also known as, my favorite fix to date!  Of course, it may have helped that I requested items similar to those I had seen on another blog.  Check that, it definitely helped.  I got pretty much exactly what I had requested with a couple of surprises as well! :)

Item #1 | Staccato Laina Plaid Cotton Burgundy Button-Up
First up, this burgundy button-up.  I loved it when I pulled it out of the box!  It was very Christmas-y and in my mind, perfect for this time of year!  But then I put it on and I felt sort of like a farmer.  (And not in a good Bachelor Chris farmer-like way.)  It's like camo--I just can't do it.  I guess growing up in Iowa left me with a few preconceived notions about certain patterns and this one was just not my fave.  And with a $58 price tag, I had no qualms about sending it back.

Item #2 | Market and Spruce Benzer Mixed Material Burgundy Sweater
Next, is this burgundy sweater with an attached "shirt" underneath.  It's not really a shirt, but a small piece of fabric that looks like it.  This is totally me!  I always wear tanks under my shirts anyway because I the layered look, and since this has the layered look already, it's perfect!  Love the color, love the style, it seems perfect for this time of year!  It was most definitely a keeper, so much so that I wore it the very next day!  {This was one of my requested items, by the way.}  Perhaps my favorite piece to date!

Item #3 | Market and Spruce Wilco Solid Quilted Olive Vest
Another requested item.  This vest.  It's amazing.  The color.  The gold zipper.  The pockets.  The subtle quilted pattern.  I also love how thin it is!  I have other vests that are so thick they make me feel like a marshmallow.  This one, though, is light weight, yet warm, and hence amazing.  Another keeper.  Bonus - multiple students complemented me on it, which led to me explaining Stitch Fix.  A few of the girls jotted down the website, but I felt a little weird asking them to use my referral code. :(

Item #4 | Pixley Farris Faceted Stone Statement Necklace
I like this necklace, but it arrived broken.  The metal rings that connected two of the stones came apart.  It was fixable, but in my experience, when a necklace breaks in that manner, it never stay together like it should.  Stitch Fix offered a 15% discount, but come on, 15%??  No thanks.  Besides, lately I'm more of a classic necklace than statement necklace wearer, so I had no issues sending this back.

Item #5 | Kut from the Kloth Kate Distressed Boyfriend Jeans
I also requested a pair of boyfriend jeans.  I wanted to try a pair without actually shopping for them myself.  Bad idea.  Bad, bad idea.  Like, they looked so bad I didn't even take a picture because I didn't want to remember what they looked like!  Not to mention, they were about two sizes too big!!  (How did that happen??)  Oh well, I tried.  And besides, it's actually kind of nice when something is that bad and I don't have to make the decision of what to keep.  (Because let's be honest, I'm not sure I'll ever keep the entire box...I just can't spend that much money all at once.)

So there you have it!  My third and most favorite fix to date!  I went ahead and scheduled my next fix for eight weeks from now - on my birthday!  I could sign up for bimonthly fixes, but the control freak in my likes to manually select the dates I receive my fix!  Weird, I know.

P is for Potty Trained!

That's right, folks!  We have an official big boy - a kid who potties in the toilet and no longer wears a diaper!  I've been hesitant to write anything out of fear of jinxing it, but we're going on six days strong now, and with the exception of day one, he's had at most only one accident per day!

It all started last Friday.  Being the Super Dad he is, Craig took the day off work to tackle day one of potty training himself.  We hyped "Brantley's Special Day" for a day or two prior and although Brantley didn't know everything that it entailed, he did know that it would start with a trip to Lamar's for a Daddy-Brantley doughnut date.  And boy was he excited!  (Holden still went to daycare.)

We'd been talking about potty training for awhile.  Brantley has seemed ready for a couple of months now, telling us each time he pooped and even peeing in his little potty chair on occasion before baths.  However,  we didn't want to compete with summertime, warm weather, and playing outside, so we decided to hold off until it was too cold to do anything but hang out indoors.

I was nervous and not quite sure what to expect.  Craig said a couple of months ago that he felt like potty training Brantley was going to be really easy.  A part of me agreed...and wanted to agree in hopes that Craig was right.  But another part of me knew better.  After all, I've heard horror stories about potty training and about how, for many parents, it's the hardest part of parenthood to that point.  Nonetheless, I kept an open mind and a positive attitude.

We used Lora Jensen's 3-Day Method, as suggested by Craig's sister.  She swore by it for all three of her kids - two of which were boys just slightly older than Brantley is now.  The method is all about positive reinforcement, encouragement, and praise.  You can't leave home and you have to focus on nothing but your potty-training child for three days straight.  The author has a lot of good ideas, but quite honestly, she doesn't say anything that isn't common sense.  I mean, of course you don't want to tell your kid going potty in their underwear is naughty!!

Anyway, Brantley had a few accidents with Craig on Friday, but to my surprise, by the time I got home from work Friday evening, he was consistently telling us when he needed to go potty!  Another accident on Saturday and another on Sunday, but mostly just successful trips to the toilet!  It's like he just got it!  Same story when he returned to daycare on Monday.  One accident Monday, one on Tuesday, but I'm happy to report, he went the entire day today without any accidents!

He does seem a little nervous about the whole pooping thing, but we're six days in and he's gone on the toilet a total of five times (with one accident) so I'm gonna go ahead and call that a success!  What is it about kids being scared to poop on the toilet??

I keep thinking he's going to revert and refuse to tell us when he needs to go.  I mean, that was way too easy to just be over and done with, right?  But I also know that once we brought Brantley home from the hospital, things have been easy peasy, so why would this be any different?  Turns out, the hubs may have been right!

In one sense, I'm beyond happy about having only one child in diapers.  But, oddly enough, there is a part of me that's sad.  My first baby has graduated from the last thing that labeled him as "baby".  And this means he's going to start preschool soon, and then go to kindergarten, and then before we know it, he'll be headed to college.  This is just the start, it seems.  *Tear*

It's a good thing two-year-olds in underwear are so cute! :)

Holden Beckett: 7 Months Old!

Here we are!  The upward side of one-half of a year.  There are only five months until your first birthday and I think it's finally sinking in that I no longer have a wee little baby!  (Or did I say that last month?)  Your sixth month of life brought about a bigger interest in solids, your first taste of water, your first bite (and then some) of a Mum Mum, and baths like a big boy {in the bath seat}.  You can sit unassisted {for a short while anyway} and, for the first time {today actually}, you army crawled!  I swear you're fussier now than you were at two months old.  I blame it on your naps (or lack thereof) and the time change a few weeks ago.  You get so tired by 7pm and seem to practically beg us to put you to bed.  Teething could also be a culprit, though none have popped through just yet.  Otherwise, it's just the same old, same old.  We're enjoying each and every day (fussy baby and all) and can't imagine our family without you!

7-Month Update:

Size - 17 pounds is a complete guesstimate

Words - Just lots of babbles, squeals, and giggles.

Activity - You spend most of your time these days on the floor.  Rolling, scooting backwards, and now army crawling!  You love watching your brother's every move, as well as getting your hands on his toys.  (He doesn't love it, however.)  You still spend a lot of time in your doorway bouncer.  You've learned how to swing back and forth in it (you bounce a couple of times and then pick up your feet to swing and swing) and some days, I swear you could swing for hours!

Food - 6 to 7 ounces of formula 5 times per day.  Solids (rice or oatmeal + a fruit or veggie or both) twice per day.  So far, you've had bananas, pears, prunes, butternut squash, sweet potato, avocado, and carrots, with a few more options in our freezer.  You have developed a bigger interest in solids than you had a month ago, but you're still not die-hard crazy about them either.

Sleep - You sleep about ten hours each night.  Naps are still short and very inconsistent, which make for miserably fussy evenings most nights. :(

Bedtime/Waketime - The time change a couple of weeks ago brought about an earlier bedtime.  It was apparent you were exhausted come 7pm, so bedtime is around 7:30 each night.  You still go to sleep shortly after we lay you down, no fuss and no rocking necessary.  You usually wake between 5:30 and 6am.  Sometimes (weekends) you fuss your way back to sleep for awhile, other times (weekdays), I get you up.

Hair - Light brown.

Eyes - Bright blue

Teeth - Nothing official.  But the fussiness...there just has to be a tooth soon!

Wardrobe - Pretty true to size.  Mostly 6 to 9 months, but you can still wear some 3 to 6 month items.

Diapers - Size 2

Likes - Brantley, Kinnick, Mum Mums, your doorway bouncer, being held, being talked to, sticking out your tongue, any toy of Brantley's that you can get your hands on!

Dislikes - Being tired.  Having your nose wiped.

Mommy's Fave - I feel like you still have a sweet, baby smell.  I know it won't last much longer, so I'm enjoying it before it disappears for good!

Dr. Seuss Baby Shower

Almost one year to date (this post is a bit delayed) after throwing our good friend, Katie, a bridal shower, Lauren and I were back together planning something even more fun - a baby shower for the upcoming arrival of baby boy Colton!  The minute a baby shower was mentioned, I knew of the perfect theme - Dr. Seuss!  Katie is an elementary school teacher and has always loved Dr. Seuss.  We asked each guest to bring a Dr. Seuss book in lieu of a card.  I really couldn't think of anything more perfect for her and her unborn baby boy.

Of course, the details are always my favorite.  And I think the details made this my favorite shower to plan to date!  I created the invites with a little "inspiration" from Etsy.  On the menu: Poodles Eating Noodles (pasta salad), Truffula Sticks & Dip (broccoli and celery), Hop on Popcorn (almond bark-covered popcorn), Green Eggs (pretzels with frosting and a green M&M) and Ham (pieces of deli ham on toothpicks), Fish in a Dish (goldfish), Bar-ba-loots Truffula Fruits (fruit tray), Cat in the Hat Parfaits (strawberry parfaits), Suess Juice (blue punch), and delicious and adorable Dr. Seuss themed cookies from Connie's Cookies

We had each guest sign Dr. Seuss' Happy Birthday to You book.  Awesome idea courtesy of Pinterest.  And no shower is complete without a diaper cake!

Baby Colton was definitely showered with love and it seemed like a good time was had by all!  Thanks for letting us plan your shower, Katie, and congrats on your sweet new addition!
