Bumpdate: Week 26

So I had my first random belly touching experience.  I gained a few new students this semester and on the second day of having one of them in class, she asked if she could feel the baby kicking in my belly!  I usually don't get too weirded out by this, but c'mon, it was her second day of class and I'm her teacher!  I wasn't sure how to respond, so I scrambled to say, "Well, he's not moving at this instant....but I'll let you know if he starts!"  Oddly enough (wink wink), Baby hasn't moved yet during her block...  I'm sure her intentions were well, and there are definitely students I wouldn't mind touching my belly...I guess I was just taken aback by her directness on the second day of class!

Another weird prego side effect - I went to the eye doctor for a regular check up and apparently, my eyes have changed significantly - both my prescription and astigmatism.  My doctor said it could be due to pregnancy and all the crazy hormones in my body right now.  Weird though, because I went after having Brantley and my prescription hadn't changed one bit!  The doctor told me that things could very well "normalize" after having this baby...but likely not until I'm done breast feeding.  It's crazy to me how pregnancy affects more than you ever imagined possible!  (After having Brantley, I went to the dentist and had something like eight cavities!  That was not fun!)

I'm still feeling pretty good and trying to fathom that I'm 26 weeks into this pregnancy!  According to my Baby Center app, the countdown to Baby's due date has gone from triple to double digits this week!  98 days and counting...  98 days of normalcy to prepare for life with two kids...  Heaven, help me!

How Far Along: 26 weeks

Size of Baby: ~14 inches, 1 2/3 pounds; the size (length) of a green onion

Gender: BOY

Weight Gain: 19-20 pounds

Food Cravings: Sweets...cookies and ice cream...I always feel the need for dessert after dinner!

Food Aversions: None

Movement: I can definitely tell the baby is getting longer.  I feel distinct kicks and punches quite often throughout the day, as well as see my belly jump and thump from the outside.  Haven't felt any protruding body parts yet, but I have a feeling it's not too far away!

Sleep: Sleeping pretty well still.  I always start out on my left side, hugging my Snoogle, but often wake up on my back and/or on my right side.

Clothing: Still about 90/10.  I feel like I went on a major shopping spree over the weekend after finding a bag of maternity clothes (mostly jeans) a friend had given me!  I knew I had her old clothes (as most of them have been hanging in my closet for 2+ months), but didn't realize there was a second bag hidden in our basement!  Hello six or more pairs of jeans!!  Now, if only I could wear the jeans to work on a daily basis... :(

Other Pregnancy Symptoms: Acid reflux on occasion (Seems to be brought on by chocolate, but do you think I've given up eating chocolate??  Heck no!!), Braxton Hicks a few times per day, especially when I use my stomach muscles, worsening of vision, sore hands in the mornings, but not as bad as it has been (and was with Brantley).

What I Miss: The usual.  98(ish) days til I can have a beer! :)

Best Moment: Hearing from people (co-workers) that I finally look pregnant!  Haha.  I've had a few of those comments since returning from winter break!  Like my pregnancy with Brantley, I always take it as a compliment. :)

Looking Forward To: Spring!!  We had a pretty warm weekend (60 on Sunday) and it was nice to go for a walk and venture out to the park.  Also looking forward to my spring maternity clothes (minus the white, pasty legs under the skirts)!  I'm getting rather sick of my pants and long-sleeve options.

Here's my 26-week bump!  I don't think I realize how big I am until looking at a picture!

Sesame Street Live

It's funny.  When you become a parent, things change.  What you thought to be one of the most important aspects of your life may no longer be quite as important.  Iowa football, for instance.  I was a pretty die-hard fan pre-Brantley.  I let their losses ruin my Saturdays.  Seriously.  I still love Iowa football, but if you would have asked me on a Friday this fall who Iowa's opponent was the following day, I would have scrambled to check my calendar.  A few years ago, I would have rolled my eyes at the thought of that.

For Craig, it was KU basketball.  He planned his life around KU basketball.  Besides me, it was his top priority.  Hands down.  And I could probably even give a few examples of when he put KU basketball above me.  (Right, honey?)  Never, did I ever, think having a kid would change that about him.

Turns out, I was wrong.

In November, we decided to buy tickets for Sesame Street Live.  Brantley was obsessed with Elmo at the time and we thought it would be the perfect mid-January activity.  (He still is obsessed with "Melma", but has developed a newer love for Mickey Mouse.)  There were multiple showtimes to choose from, ranging from Thursday through Sunday evening and scattered all throughout the weekend, so I asked the hubs which time he thought would be best.  We ended up buying tickets for the 2pm Saturday afternoon show.  We thought that would give us the perfect excuse to grab lunch somewhere downtown before heading to the Sprint Center.

A few days before the show, as we were finalizing our plans, Craig realized he was going to miss the KU game due to the show.  And not just any old game, but the KU/K-State Sunflower Showdown.  Seeing that KU doesn't play Mizzou anymore, the K-State game is probably the biggest rivalry game of the year.  The hubs was forced to trade in his comfy couch and crimson and blue for Elmo, Big Bird, and the rest of the Sesame Street gang.  Lucky him.

When I asked why he didn't think to check the basketball schedule before deciding on a showtime, he replied with, "I was thinking more about Brantley and his nap schedule."

Altogether now...awhhhhhhhhhhhh. :)

And not only did he give up watching the KU game (in real time-he DVRed it, of course), but not once did he complain about missing it and may have even mutured the words, "It's all worth it for Brantley."

Proof that becoming a parent changes you in ways you never thought possible.

As for the show, it was 90 minutes long with a 15-minute intermission.  Brantley was amused for about the first 40 minutes, but got a little antsy (bored, tired) after intermission.  (As did his Mama and Daddy.)  We had pretty great seats--the first row not on the floor--though I will say, there wasn't really a bad seat in the place because of how small they limit the audience to.  And because we were in the front row of our section, Brantley was lucky enough to get to touch a couple of the characters as they walked through the audience.  No one as cool as Elmo...but characters nonetheless!  (Telly and Zoe...I googled them.)

Seeing Brantley's face when the character's first came on stage was one of those moments that makes parenthood worth every frustration, every penny, and every compromise.  Even if it that compromise is Sesame Street Live instead of a beloved KU basketball game.

Bumpdate: Week 25

We had our fifth(?) doctor's appointment last Friday.  Baby's heartbeat was around 140-something.  It's funny how the stats are less memorable the second time around. :)

I'm feeling great and very little has changed since last week, so I'm gonna get right to the bumpdate!

How Far Along: 25 weeks

Size of Baby: ~13.5 inches, 1.5 pounds; the size of a rutabaga

Gender: BOY

Weight Gain: Not as awful as I thought it would be after the holidays...19 pounds.  I'll take it.  Though something tells me I might gain more than the 29 pounds I gained last time when all is said and done.

Food Cravings: None

Food Aversions: None really

Movement: Feeling this baby multiple times per day.

Sleep: Sleeping well for the most part.

Clothing: Lots of sweats, sweatshirts, and leggings over break, but now I'm back to work. :(  Loving my new pants from Old Navy!  They are very refreshing after squeezing into my pre-prego jeans for the last 25 weeks!

Other Pregnancy Symptoms: Acid reflux on occasion, though not as bad as it has been (and as it was with Brantley).  Braxton Hicks a few times per day, but nothing painful by any means.

What I Miss: Lately, being able to sleep on my stomach.

Best Moment: Finishing Brantley's "big boy" room and preparing the nursery for a new baby.  However, it was also the worst moment.  Turns out, I'm pretty sentimental about my first baby growing up!

Looking Forward To: Enjoying these last 15 weeks of pregnancy.  And not wishing for it to be over already--because let's face it, I'm a bit terrified for Baby #2!

Winter Break

Having two full weeks off work has been nothing short of glorious.  It always is, of course, and makes having to return that much harder.  Lucky for me (and the rest of the Midwest), these bone-chilling, record-breaking temperatures have granted me one more day off.  I'm not a fan of the cold, but I will gladly compromise for a day off of work.  Especially an inservice day that {supposedly} doesn't count against our four built-in snowdays.  Horray!

I had a number of things I wanted to accomplish over break and I'm feeling rather good about accomplishing most to all of them.  And because I like to make lists just to check things off, it calls for a blog post. :)

My Winter Break Goals:

1.  Transfer iPhone photos to laptop.
I had nearly 3000 pictures on my iPhone.  Not 30, not 300...3000.  (I might have a problem.)  Therefore, I was never able to download the latest operating system because I didn't have enough available space.  I transferred each and every photo to our laptop and then deleted 1500 of them from my iPhone.  I nearly had a nervous breakdown in the process of "deleting" all these pictures, but accomplished the goal.  Which leads me to the next one...

2.  Download iOS7.
Three plus months after it was released, my phone is finally up-to-date with Apple's latest operating system.  And I must say, I'm loving {almost} everything about it!  It's new, it's fresh, it's fast.  I finally feel hip with the iPhone world again.

3.  Clean up laptop: transfer photos to external hard drive & delete old files.
Currently, there are over 6000 photos on our laptop.  And that's after I moved many of them (three years worth?) to the external hard drive.  It's amazing how deep cleaning a computer gives you the same feeling as deep cleaning a house.

4.  Paint Brantley's big boy room.
This was "my" goal, even though the hubs would be the one to do the actual painting.  Luckily, he was on board and even gave up watching football on New Year's Day to change the wall color from one shade of blue to another.  I love how it turned out!

5.  Assemble the new crib.
Again, "my" goal, but not my job.  Once the walls were finished, the hubs was motivated to finish the entire room in record time.  He didn't have to twist my arm.  I love a good home improvement (or redecorating) project!

6.  Get Brantley's haircut.
In early December, Craig sent me an email at work that read "I think we need to get Brantley's hair cut.  It's just uneven in spots and is hard to manage in the mornings."  After laughing out loud over the "hard to manage" part, I agreed to make an appointment.  I did, for last Thursday, and then as the appointment neared, I started having second thoughts.  Sure, some days his hair seemed long--long enough for a cut--but other days, I was convinced the stylist would laugh at us for bringing him in.  So I cancelled.  But now, just three days later, I'm kicking myself for cancelling because it seems rather long again.

7.  Figure out how to get Brantley to eat veggies.
This goal seems to be more of a magic trick.  And I'm not sure it was truly accomplished.  But I did make some muffins with carrots and squash in them, and he likes them, so I'm going to consider it a success!  Thanks for the recipe, Rachel!

8.  List and sell (or donate) some old clothing/shoes.
I'm in this JoCo Mom's Facebook group.  After cleaning our guest bedroom and moving things to the basement, we came across some stuff to sell.  I finally had a chance to take and post some pictures of the items and have made $50ish easy dollars from doing so!

There were also a number of things not on my "list", but things I'm happy were accomplished nonetheless!

1.  Magnet board in our kitchen.
Brantley got some letter and number magnets for Christmas.  We copied some friends and hung a drip pan in our kitchen for Brantley to stick these magnets to.

2.  Start/finish Brantley's "big boy" room and transition him to sleep there.
This turned out to be a whirlwind of a project!  When the hubs and I get going on something, we never like to leave it unfinished.  So, in about three days worth, Brantley's new room was started and {nearly} finished and he's officially moved in.  This also spawned a couple of DIY projects...

It also leaves us with an empty nursery for a few months.

3.  I bought a Cricut.
Yes, this is worth posting about!  I used my Christmas money to buy a used Cricut and got a steal of a deal!  It probably helped that I bought it from my cousin's mother-in-law.

4.  Bought some new maternity pants.
I was on an online search for new jeans for Brantley when I came across a couple maternity deals at Old Navy that I just couldn't pass up.  Two new pairs of pants that are technically jeans, but could also, paired with a nice top, pass as nice work pants.  It's amazing how much more comfortable they are than the jeggings I was squeezing into!

5.  Lots of around-town fun with Brantley.
Brantley is finally the age where we can venture out and enjoy some of the kiddo activities around town.  Among our new, winter break experiences: Legoland, Cosmic Jump, Chuck E. Cheese, and Monkey Bizness!  I've said it once, and I'll say it again...having a kid is so much fun because you get to act like one all over again!  I'm pretty sure I was the most excited one in the bunch for our first trip to Chuck E. Cheese!

6.  Sleep in.
Not exactly on your "list" when you have a 1-year old, but for some reason, our 1-year old decided to sleep past 8am nearly every day of break!  He's going to be in for a rude awakening come Tuesday.  As is his Mama...

7.  Extra play time with this handsome boy.
It's finally dawning on me that these are the last few months Brantley will spend as an only child.  The center-of-attention, always-focused-on only child.  And making me a bit sad.  So of course, I enjoyed the extra time with him.

And that is how I spent my winter break.  I'm so thankful for a job that allows me time off around the holidays to relax, rejuvenate, and spend some extra time at home.  Not exactly looking forward to returning to the daily grind on Tuesday, but I am looking forward to my next day off - only two weeks to go!

Officially a "Big Boy"

Oh Brantley.  Or should I say Big Boy?

It seems like just yesterday that I wrote about your first night in the crib.  You were 6 1/2 weeks old then.

Now, just a few days shy of 1 1/2 years, we moved you into your "big boy" bed.  Officially, a toddler bed, but also known as a crib with a half rail across the front.  Which means you can independently crawl in and out of your bed, as you please.  You no longer need us for this.  Just another thing to add to the list...the I'm-becoming-so-independent list.  Sigh...

I'm not sure either of us (your Daddy nor I) had planned to move you so soon...after all, we still have 3+ months until your baby brother arrives and weeks more until he moves into the crib...but the toddler bed was assembled and ready to go.  And we knew we'd have to transition you eventually.  So we thought "Why not?!"

Night number one went well.  I sat on the floor of your "big boy" room and rubbed your back until you were asleep, and then to my surprise, you slept through the night without falling out once!

Nap number one, on the other hard, was a bit rougher.  For both Mama and Big Boy.  You were confused and seemingly scared of being left alone in this strange, new room.  It probably didn't help that some strange voice (your daddy) was talking to us through the video monitor.  You didn't want me to leave you and squeezed me tight whenever I tried.  Of course, this rattled my emotions (pregnancy hormones, perhaps?) and I was right there with you, crying on the floor of your "big boy" room.  I just couldn't help but think back to your days as a newborn and then about how far we've come and how you are growing up so fast and how much your tight hugs meant to me.  I love, love, love everything about this "big boy" stage--it's definitely my fave--but that doesn't mean I don't get emotional about you growing up.

You finally fell asleep, but it was short lived.  Your nap was less than an hour (which is really short, especially considering how tired you were).  I'm not sure if you had a bad dream, or what, but we rescued you from your new bed and you slept on Dada's chest for another hour or so.  All the while, Mama was still trying to catch her composure from the wild emotions the hour before.

Night number two went much better.  That is, until you fell out about 30 minutes in.  Oh, I wish I had a picture.  You didn't fall out completely...your body was still laying on the mattress, but your head was hanging over the side and touching the floor.  Kind of like you were getting ready to somersault out of the bed.  And you slept through it all.  To my surprise (again), when you awoke in the morning, you stayed put, in your bed, until I came to greet you.

Currently, you're taking nap number two.  Putting you down for your nap went much better than yesterday.  You must be getting used to this "big boy" thing.  I watched you (on the video monitor) crawl out and back in and out and back in multiple times.  I had to intrude, put you back in your bed, and ask you nicely to stay there twice.  Finally, after about 45 minutes of playing, tossing and turning, and looking around at your new room, you fell asleep and that's where you are now.

Mama is so proud of you, Brantley, for making the transition so well.  I will say, I didn't expect much less seeing that you've made everything pretty simple on us.

And as for your "big boy" room, it's not done, but done enough for now.  Definitely functional.  The walls are painted and decor is coming along nicely.  Your closet and drawers are even full of your clothes.  The nursery is near empty, except for baby stuff.  Which again, makes Mama tear up a bit.  But...I will say, your "big boy" room is pretty sweet.  Don't tell your baby brother, but I think I might like it even more than the nursery!  Pictures to come once it's all said and done!

Love you more than ever, Big Boy!

Love,
Your Mama

Our NYE

This year, we celebrated New Year's Eve exactly like we did two years ago.  Nothing elaborate.  Nothing extravagant.  Not even with friends.  Some football, fondue, and our little family of three.  We even busted out the party hats and horns.  It was very low-key, but still very special.

We tried for a family photo.  After realizing a three-person selfie from the iPhone was easier said than done, I set the timer on the real camera.  Turns out, that's how I need to take pictures of Brantley all the time.  He loved the beeping of the timer and the multiple flashes in a row, which made for a perfect NYE face!

We fondued for the fourth(?) year in a row.  It's sort of become a tradition at our house.  And I love traditions.  What is it about apples dipped in cheese?  I'm not sure, but they are so tasty and I look forward to it every.single.year.

I look forward to all that 2014 brings and can't wait to see how we celebrate next year as a family of four!

Bumpdate: Week 24

Here it is - my final pregnancy update of 2013!  I've got 45 more minutes to type and post this before we ring in the new year!  (Crazy NYE plans, right?!)  It's so crazy that 2014 will bring a second baby to our little family of three.  Even crazier that there are only about 15 weeks remaining until that happens!  And even crazier that I've been in my second trimester for ten whole weeks now and the third is only about a month away!  Nonetheless, I'm ready for the next 15ish weeks and look forward to the amazing year ahead!

How Far Along: 24 weeks

Size of Baby: ~12 inches, just over a pound; the size of an ear of corn

Gender: BOY

Weight Gain: Yikes...I've eaten so much lately with the holidays and all.  I'm already dreading getting on that scale at my doctor's appointment on Friday...

Food Cravings: Nothing specific, but lots of sweets and desserts.

Food Aversions: Still not in the cooking-mood, but nothing has been a true aversion.

Movement: Feeling my stomach jump and thump from the outside.

Sleep: Sleeping great.

Clothing: Still squeezing into my pre-prego jeggings.  Thank goodness for this one pair of jeggings...but I wear them about five days per week!  I ordered a few new pairs of maternity jeans from Old Navy...waiting on them to arrive and crossing my fingers that they work!

Other Pregnancy Symptoms: Heartburn/acid reflux was in full force for a few days around Christmas.  Pepcid and Tums, galore!  But surprisingly, I haven't felt it since!

What I Miss: Nothing specific this week.

Best Moment: Christmas was pretty fantastic.

Looking Forward To: Saying hello to 2014 later tonight!

2013: A Year-in-Review

Ever since starting this blog, I've always done some sort of a yearly recap.

Check each one out here:

This year, after seeing my friend Katie's adorable Christmas "letter", I decided to take a slightly different approach to my 2013 recap.  Thanks for the inspiration, Katie, and I hope you don't mind me "borrowing" your cute idea! :)

And because I'm such a picture-fanatic, how about another version of 2013's year-in-review?  A slideshow of only about 137 of my favorite Instagrams from the year.  (I did another slideshow with 60, but decided 60 photos to represent 365 days just wasn't cutting it!)  Enjoy!

Happy New Year friends, family, and blog-followers!  Here's to another fantastic year ahead!

Daycare 2013

I may complain about the length of the drive to daycare to get Brantley each and every day, but in all honesty, we got pretty lucky in finding a great place for Brantley to go during the days.  Miss Stephanie was an in-home daycare recommendation from a friend and fellow co-worker who had used her for the previous five years.  Her little boy, Elijah, went to kindergarten two months after Brantley was born, so Brantley pretty much stepped in and took his spot.

Miss Stephanie ventures out with the kiddos each and every day (open gym, Monkey Bizness, Deanna Rose, the park, the movies, McDonald's, preschool, music class, and so much more).  I've never once worried about whether Brantley is being properly cared for and I know he loves friends and his time spent at Miss Stephanie's.

One of my favorite things about Miss Stephanie is that, like myself, she takes photos galore!  I always get so excited when I get a Facebook notification at school that informs me of a tagged photo by Miss Stephanie.  If I can't spend the weekdays with my little man, getting to see a picture of him in action is the next-best thing!

For the record, I wanted to post some pictures of Brantley at daycare throughout the 2013 calendar year.  I love that he'll be able to look back on these someday and fondly remember (or not remember...he's only 1) his first full year at Miss Stephanie's.  Here's to many more years to come!
