Who Knew?

Imagine this.  You are sound asleep at 1am when you're suddenly awakened by beeping of the smoke detector.  And not just the chirps when the battery is low.  A full-on beeeeeeeeep beeeeeeeeep.  And then it stops.  The dog scurries under the covers because he's terrified of beeps like that everything. And then you come to and realize the obnoxious noise you just heard was the smoke alarm.

That's exactly what happened last night.

Even though the beeping had stopped, I couldn't help but think, "Holy hell, our house is on fire!"  Lots of other thoughts went through my head as well (What do I grab?...Did the crazy neighbor have something to do with this?...Can this really be happening?...I better put my bra on.), but for some reason I was frozen.

The hubs made his way out of bed and looked around.  Nothing out of the ordinary.  Together, we made our way downstairs, me sniffing and smelling for smoke and feeling the walls for warmth.  I was just certain something was on fire.  We checked closets, the garage, the basement, everything.  I even walked around outside, in nothing but my pajamas, expecting to see flames shooting up from somewhere.  Nothing.

Back upstairs we went.  At closer examination of the smoke detector, the hubs noticed a spider crawling on it.  Hmmmm...interesting.  He killed it.  And then we went back to bed.

"Could a spider really have set off the smoke detector?"  I asked Craig as we lay there, too shaken up to fall back asleep.

We finally fell asleep and woke up to normalcy this morning.  He told the neighbor about the ordeal and the neighbor's response?  "Yep it was the spider.  I've heard of that happening before."  Then I googled it.  And whaddayaknow, here's what popped up when I typed in "Can a spider set..."

So apparently, it's true!  Spiders (and spider webs) can set off smoke alarms!  Something about the particles in a spider's web are similar to the particles in smoke.  Interesting...

Just one more reason to hate spiders!

This Summer vs. Last

In honor of the first day of summer (even though I considered it "summer" four weeks ago), I thought I'd compare this summer to last summer.  My, how things have changed!

Last summer, I could sleep in, and did, most days until 9am!
This summer, I'm up between 6:15 and 7:15.  Everyday.

Last summer, my weekday pool visits consisted of basking in the sun and enjoying my alone time.
This summer, they consist of sitting in the baby pool and mingling with other moms!

Last summer, I could take naps whenever I wanted.  (And there were lots of them!)
This summer, my naps revolve around Brantley's napping schedule.  And even so, I usually choose to use his naptimes for other things - like blogging!

Last summer, I was anxiously awaiting signs of labor.
This summer, I am anxiously awaiting a big first birthday party!

Last summer, I could barely make it around the block on walks without panting and sweating.
This summer, I can push a stroller, walk a dog, and still barely break a sweat.

Last summer, my only baby was my doggy.
This summer, that poor doggy doesn't get much attention anymore.

Last summer, our house was clean and clutter-free.
This summer, there are toys everywhere and bits and pieces of food scattered all over our kitchen floor.

Last summer, I still had four months before returning to work.
This summer, I'm down to six weeks.  *Tear*

Last summer, I had no idea what to expect in a life with baby.
This summer, I'm proud to have survived our first year and wouldn't change it for the world!

Happy summer everyone!

A Perfect Summer Dessert

I was in a bad mood tonight.  I was at the store trying to figure out a plan for dinner when these things caught my eye.

I figured dessert always makes me feel better, so I threw the package in my cart.  I decided to semi follow a recipe on the back for strawberry-kiwi crépes, but I mixed it up a bit.  The final product was delish!  A perfect summer dessert in my opinion.  The hubs agreed.  In fact, we may have just finished our plates of seconds. :)

Strawberry-Blueberry Crépes

Ingredients
1 package of Melissa's crépes (at Target)
2 cups heavy whipping cream
1/2 cup sugar
2 teaspoons vanilla
Strawberries, sliced
Blueberries
Chocolate sauce
Reddi whip

Directions

1) Using an electric mixer, whip the cream until semi-thick. (The actual directions said to do so until "medium peak".  I wasn't sure what that meant.)

2) Add sugar and vanilla and whip until thick.  (Or until "stiff peaks", if you speak that language.)

3) Gently fold in sliced strawberries and blueberries.

4) Place mixture in center of crépe and roll.

5) Top with chocolate sauce, reddi whip, and garnish with more fruit.  Enjoy!

A couple of notes:
  • I don't like to think of fruit as dessert.  That's why I added the chocolate sauce.  And I must say, it was a great addition!
  • You could easily half this recipe, and I definitely will next time!  I'm not sure how the whipped cream will hold up overnight.  (If it does, I'm having more for breakfast!)
  • For a summery strawberry-blueberry salad, check out this recipe on my high school friend Erin's blog!  You may have seen a picture on my Instagram recently.  Super delish and her commentary is always hilarious, as well!

K-Ches & Eric Church

So as mentioned in the Father's Day post, we spent Saturday afternoon/evening/night at Arrowhead for Kenny Chesney's No Shoes Nation concert tour.  Opening acts included Kacey Musgraves (as in Merry Go 'Round), the Eli Young Band, and the amazing Eric Church!  We love us some Eric Church, especially after seeing him last year in Topeka, and were way more excited to see him than Kenny.

We went with our friends Ben & Lauren and Mark & Hollyn.  I had the genius idea of leaving our three babies (11 1/2 months, 11 months, and 7 1/2 months) with two of my high school babysitters.  High school girls are cheap...especially when split amongst three couples...and I figured a little baby socialization would be good!  However, as the weekend approached, I got more and more nervous about my "genius" idea.  "Can they handle three babies?" was the thought playing in my head.  Over and over again.  You should have seen the instruction sheet I left them.  It may or may not have been two 8.5x11 sheets taped together, color-coded, and broken down by baby (columns) and topics (rows).  I also left them a separate sheet that included an overall timeline of the afternoon/evening not separated by baby.  It may have been a bit overkill, but 1) I'm an over-the-top control freak (that's the math teacher in me), 2) I'm super organized when it comes to that kind of stuff, and 3) each baby has their own "rules" and I wanted to make sure the girls could handle all three with no problems.  I'm sure the babysitters thought I was crazy...but they did have me in class all year so they know exactly how organized freakish I am!

Anyway, we got to Arrowhead around 2:30, met some of Ben's co-workers (who were doing the grilling), set up shop (tents, chairs), had some beers, took some pictures, ate some fantastically-good tailgate food (grilled shrimp, the world's best mac&cheese, the world's best potato salad, chicken kabobs, and other super yummy stuff)....and then the storm clouds rolled in.

According to our weather apps, we were under a thunderstorm warning only (haha I say only).  Based on those clouds, I was surprised.  I could have sworn a tornado was going to drop down.

Despite the clouds, it had yet to begin raining.  Ben lowed his tent so the wind didn't blow it away.  Otherwise, things were still going as planned.

And then, slowly at first, it began raining.  A few of us (me included) made a mad dash for the car before it poured.  A few others stayed to hold down the tent.  Then the sprinkles turned into a steady rain which turned into a downright pour.  I was so thankful to be in the car at this point.

Meanwhile, at home in Olathe, it was storming.  Bad.  I got a text from our neighbor (who knew we had high school babysitters) that said "Power just went out."  I thought he was kidding.  Because he does that often.  And he knew I'd be freaked out.  But he wasn't.  We exchanged texts with the sitters, who said our power was still on, thankfully.  I told them it was okay if they went to the basement. :)  I'm not sure if they ever did...

Back at Arrowhead, it was still pouring.  And lighting.  And thundering.  Loudly.  And very close.  After much convincing, Ben abandoned his tent to take shelter in the car.  Here are Mark and Craig dressed in ponchos to go convince him to do so.

The storm finally rolled through and rain slowed.  We made our way back to the tent.  But first, I stood in line (in the rain, with poncho) for 30 minutes for the port-a-potty.  Awesome.

Here we are under the tent.

At this point, it was still raining and we had no idea if the concert was still on.  We couldn't get much radar on our phones because everyone and their dogs were trying to do the same.  We tossed around the idea of jetting and going to Twin Peaks for some yummy bloody marys (with bacon), but there was no way out of the parking lot.

Back to the car we went since it was still raining pretty hard and COLD!  According to the radio, the concert was still on as it was "Rain or shine", but delayed an hour (6 instead of 5).  We debated about what to do.  Over and over and over again.  In the end, we decided to brave the rain and head into Arrowhead.  If it sucked, we could always leave, but better to give it a chance than eat the money we spent on tickets.

We missed Kacey Musgraves, but caught the last few songs by Eli Young Band.  It had finally stopped raining by the time we got to the stadium.

Yay for no rain!

Ben & Lauren had seats separate from us so we went our separate directions...us to the near top. #theywerestillseventybucksapiece :(  Eric Church was awesome (even from 100 rows up!) and we were glad to have stuck it out.

"These boots..."

Within 30 seconds of Eric Church walking off the stage, it started to rain.  Again.  One benefit of our nose bleed seats?  We could run to the top concourse area covered by an overhang.  Here I am saving the dry seats while the other three went to get food.  By the way, those seats are empty because they were essentially behind the stage.  Despite the rain/storms, Arrowhead was pretty full!

The rain stopped.  And Kenny came on stage.  And then Lauren texted and said there were seats open by them. Down we marched to our newly upgraded seats!  And boy were they an upgrade!

We even decided the $130 per ticket might be worth it.  Might, I said.  Until we have to fork over that money next time.

We left a little early to beat the crowd.  The babysitters said they got along perfectly and had all three babes in bed by 9.  What a fun day/night it was--even with the rain.  It may not have been what we expected (or hoped) for a June 15 concert, but it makes for a memorable story nonetheless!

Here are the pictures we took pre-storm-drama!

One last thing - we realized on Sunday just how bad Saturday's storm was when we noticed all the huge tree branches in our neighborhood that came down!!  Worst storm/wind I remember in awhile!

1st Father's Day

Minus the less-than-stellar weather (rain, storms, and clouds), we had a great first Father's Day weekend!  Saturday was spent at Arrowhead for the Kenny Chesney concert (a blog post in itself) and Sunday was very low-key.  After allowing the hubs to sleep in, we made breakfast (fried eggs, toast, fried hash browns, and fried bacon - the breakfast of champions!), then relaxed around home for awhile.  When Brantley went down for a mid-day nap, we decided to take one, too!  (Trying to recover from our long day prior.)

Of course, I made Craig take some photos with the little man - similar to the ones we took on Mother's Day.

Evidence of the humidity - my camera lens immediately fogged over once outside!

And then one with the dog, too.

When the sun finally decided to peek through on Sunday afternoon, we headed to the pool.  B-Man swam with the hubs in the big pool!  Made me crazy-nervous and I've decided he needs a baby life vest.

Later that night, we went to a friend's place for a yummy rib dinner.  I didn't think to snap any photos though.  Thanks again for cooking your own Father's Day dinner, Mark!  And inviting us to help you eat it! :)

And finally, I better not forget about Craig's gifts!  I couldn't wait any longer and gave them to him on Friday afternoon.  Oops!

First one was a baby carrier for his bike.  Craig has been talking about getting one for some time now!  I was seconds away from purchasing one on Amazon for $100 when I decided to search Craigslist.  Found the exact same one for $75.  I even did a little negotiating and talked him down to $65!  Score!  I had to drive to Lansing (~40 minutes away), but I'm on summer vacay...what else do I have to do?!

Anyway, Craig loved it!  Had it hooked up and Brantley inside within 30 minutes of getting it!  We even took it to the pool Friday afternoon!

The second gift was homemade and more sentimental.

Can you tell what it is?  Anyone??  No??  It's a framed Jayhawk made from Brantley's hand prints!  I saw the idea on Pinterest long before I was pregnant and knew I had to copy it someday.  Well, me being the determined person I am, I wanted to do it for Craig's first Father's Day.  It may have turned out more like a Jayhawk had I waited until next year, or even the following year, but I think it's pretty darn cute - especially for an 11-month old, paint, and only one adult.  And it holds a lot of sentimental value.

So there ya go!  That was Craig's very first Father's Day celebration!

And before ending this blog post, I just want to say how lucky Brantley is to have such an awesome, hands-on, sweet, caring, role-model of a father.  I couldn't have picked a better Daddy for him and we are both super lucky to have you!  Here are just a few photos of the two of you throughout the last year!

It's a Toddler Thing

I now have a kid that will only feed himself.  And a dog who waits patiently for said kid to throw food over.

Maybe Kinnick will warm up to the little man, afterall...

Side note: After every meal, there's food in the chair, on the floor, and stuck all over B's body.  In fact, we usually eat naked (by 'we', I mean 'B').  It makes this neat-freak of a mama super anxious!!

A First for All of Us!

Last night we went to a Sporting Kansas City game.  (Sporting Kansas City is the city's professional soccer team.)  Despite being a huge soccer fan, Craig had never been to a Sporting game.  Neither had I.  And neither had Brantley.  So it was a first for all of us!

I'm not a huge soccer fan, but will never pass up the opportunity to attend an athletic event on a hot summer night coupled with a few cold ones.  Especially a free one (the game, not the cold ones)!  Thanks Erica!  And game time wasn't until 7:30pm.  Which meant B was up waaaaaaay past his bedtime, but we've always said we would never let a baby stop us from living.  Or doing the things we enjoy.  And I believe we've held on firmly to that belief.  And you know what?  Brantley was fine!  In fact, he was more than fine.  He held out the entire game, never acted fussy, and only fell asleep on the drive home.  What a champ!

Anyway, Sporting lost 0-1.  But it was still fun to get out and take in one of the many great things Kansas City has to offer!

And of course, we couldn't go to our first soccer game without pictures to commemorate! :)
